Apeman Trail Camera Review
I often make trail camera videos and post them up on my Youtube channel that is also called THF Outdoors. Getting out and hiking and making videos of animals has been an awesome hobby.
One day I was on facebook and a foreigner from Asia (not exactly sure what country) reached out and offered me a free trail camera if I made a video talking about their trail camera.
A free trail camera is always awesome so I said yes. It was only after the fact that I learned that I should have asked for several of them because it takes a lot of time waiting for animals to walk past the trail camera.
But she sent me a new trail camera. It turned out to be an Apeman H40 Trail Camera (link to Apeman cameras on Amazon) and I was able to start trying it out.
What Came In The Box?
In the box there were a few items that were in the box, some items were useful and some where not.
SD Card: The 16 GB SD card that came with it was awesome. It has worked fine, I wish it had come with two of them.
Bracket Attachment: This is a little bit of a crazy contraption and will need tools to get it sufficiently tight to get it to stay in the same place when tightening the bolts and nuts. I often have animals bump my camera because I want the up close shot and the bracket seemed a little weak. I didn’t use it during testing
Mounting Screws and Drywall Anchors: These seem like the cheapest part of the whole set. I do not know why I would mount this camera on drywall unless I was using it for a security camera inside my house. I would recommend getting better screws for attaching it to a wall or tree.
Strap: The strap is decent quality and has worked well. Seems on the smaller side but it has worked to keep the camera in position.
Camera: I love the size of this camera and the color. It hides well and can be camouflaged really well on trees with dark bark. I also like that it can be tucked into the nooks of a tree to keep it in the shade and hide it even better.
Using The Apeman H40
So it took me a while to figure out where I wanted to put this camera and but I finally set it up on an awesome spot where I knew turkeys, deer, and elk may walk.
I was able to collect some great footage. I then moved it further up the mountain into some even more undisturbed locations. In all I tried it in five different areas and got mixed results at each location.
I also tried it in the vicinity of several cameras and placed it up higher on a tree so people would not notice it. I have video of the camera from another camera with elk standing all around it and I didn’t get a single video of them. Not sure what happened.
I finally had to point it up the trail and then I stated getting some awesome shots.
Camera Settings
When you are using this camera the photos are cool but if you use the photo and video setting it eats up your footage of getting the images you want. I had a beautiful black bear walk right past the camera and the camera got a great image of the bear, but just the backend of the bear leaving the frame in the video.
So I would pick just the video setting for this camera. I also would pick all the highest quality settings for the camera because I want the best footage possiable.
The trigger speed is slow on this camera but if you point it up the trail instead of across the trail you can still get some great footage.
The camera also records sound. It is not very good sound but you will see in the videos what it sounds like.
