Scent Post Set For Coyote

This set has always had my interest. It plays on the natural instinct of a coyote to mark its territory. All dogs do it so it works well is a change from a dirt hole set or a flat set.

A sent post set is a set for coyotes where a trapper places a stick, rock, or log near the travel way of a coyote. The trapper places a foothold trap at the location and then puts urine and, or lure on the scent post (stick, rock, or log) to attract the coyote to come and mark its territory at the set.

How To Make Scent Posts

One of the ideas I have had with this set that I have not tried yet is to make scent post sets by using domestic dogs. Go tie your scent posts along the walking trails or other common places people take their dogs.

Put a little coyote urine on them and then several dogs will mark your sticks and you will get an awesome scent post as all the neighborhood dogs come and mark your sent posts.

Scent Post Quick Tips

  • A scent post should be a rock, stick, or log near the edge of a trail or road
  • Palace the trap 12 inches out towards the trail or road
  • Offset the trap about 12 inches to the right or left
  • You are trying to catch the coyote when it lifts a leg to urinate on the trap
  • Use urine and lure on this set, put it on the rock, stick, or log. This is the scent post.
  • This set can work for other furbearers such as fox trapping, bobcat trapping, and badger trapping.

  • You can use a foothold trap on a scent post set such as the MB 450 or the MB 550. Check out our article about MB 450s.
