Is A Treble Hook Coyote Trap Legal?
No it is not legal so don’t use treble hooks for trapping coyotes!
As I was browsing the internet I came across the suggestion for people trapping coyotes to make treble hook sets. This set is unethical and illegal in all states and will have harsh consequences if you are discovered.
DO NOT MAKE THIS TRAP! This trap makes trappers, hunters and other outdoorsman look bad who are actually obeying the law. If you see someone using this trap advise against it. The consequences and possibility of injuring or killing protected animals is very high.
This set is made by taking a strong rope and hanging five or six feet off the ground and then tying a large treble hook to the rope. The treble hook is then baited with deer meat or chicken to attract a coyote.
When a coyote comes by and sees and smells the bait on the treble hook it jumps and bites the bait and gets hooked. This coyote will hang from the treble hook alive until someone comes and shoots it.

One of the best sets to use when trapping a coyote is a snare. A snare can be used as a kill trap or as a restraint. Instead of leaving the animal hanging it will dispatch the coyote quickly or restrain it on the ground until the trapper can come and dispatch the animal.
Another really good way of catching coyotes is using a foothold trap. This allows you to make coyote sets and use bait to attract the coyote. Then the coyote is healed on the ground by its foot and can be released unharmed if the trapper desires. It is only used to hold the animal.
One of the best foothold traps to use is the MB 450 foothold trap. It will work to catch coyotes, fox, raccoons and other similar animals. It is a better trap than a treble hook trap because it allows you to also remove other predators.
There are much better ways than using a treble hook to trap a coyote that are legal and wont cause you to serve jail time when used legally.
